I fall asleep for aprx. 4 hours, or until 3:15 AM. Then I'm up and awake for around 4 more hours, and if I have nothing to do, I fall back asleep. Its a pattern that started in HS, and for some reason I have never been able to shake it. There are some days when I can sleep through the night, but for that to happen, I have to be dog tired when I get to bed. What do I do? Well, since I know that I don't get much sleep in the night hours, I leave something from the day to do at night, like cleaning out the rat cage, or feeding my mice. I also keep all of my really good books by the bed, ones that I've read before, so if I'm still tired but just can't fall asleep, I can read until my brain quits and makes me shut down.

I've had what i like to call "insomnia" (which it might not be) since high school... which was like 8 years ago. I'm also a very light sleeper.

I've found that over-the-counter sleep aids tend to at least make me pass out for a few hours.

Another thing i do to kinda help me fall asleep at all is to use a relaxation technique. Most of it i learned when i took yoga (it was power yoga, so we only did the relaxation the week before finals in college). Lie flat on your back with your toes pointed up and your palms facing up. (I do a little variation, but i believe the actual technique can be found in most yoga books.) Close your eyes and try to block everything out except your breathing. When you breathe, you want to breathe only through your nose, and you want your belly to blow up when you inhale, and go down when you exhale. Take deep, slow breaths. Now, once you're comfortable breathing like that, concentrate on your toes. Clench your feet and toes, and hold that for 5 slow breaths. Then release, and enjoy the sensation you feel. Then flex your calf and lower leg muscles, again for 5 breaths. Do this as you go up your entire body. (I do my arms and hands before my face.) By the time you've finished doing your entire body, you should feel pretty relaxed... and hopefully relaxed enough to at least begin to fall asleep.

Hope i helped!

i will give that a try. i think it is probably from a lot of inactivity, so i ahve energy at night. but yeah it is always bad during finals week for me. i remember one time last year, i had an early class and for like a week straight i wouldn't fall asleep till 5, no mater what i did. so i would just read. i think that week i read like 3 or 4, 200-300+ page books. which was actually kinda good because i bought them like 2 years before and never got arounf to finishing them. i guess i can pick up where i left in The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

I always loved that book. My grandmother said it was her favorite, and I read it when I was like 14 to please her. To my suprise, it was actually good.

i used to take sleeping pills and they would never work for me! what makes me fall asleep is motion, such as swinging or rocking. i dont know if it has to do with when i was a baby or not. usually if i couldnt sleep id try readin a book, which always makes you sleepy or sit in a rocking chair for awhile. my main problem with sleeping was i would think too much. i would try to turn my mind off but it wouldnt happen. now my life isnt too exciting, so i dont have too much to think about. i work during the day and am exhausted by the time night rolls around,so its easy to fall asleep nowadays.if it starts effecting your daily schedule, id talk to your doctor about it. good luck!

Mostly Sunday nights, because I stay up way to long on Fridays, Then sleep to long into Saturday and come Sunday I'm ready to go strong. I'm a night owl and have to force myself to go to bed, 3:00 usually. Once there, I sleep like a log (had a car hit the house 12 feet away, didn't wake up) and don't want to get up.
I have tryed to change it, haven't succeded yet.

I'm also a very light sleeper and anything keeps me up... that, and I'm just not tired at the end of the day unless I really overwork myself.

I get kind of excited at night, too, like I really want to do things and I start to get really hot (my room is warmest) and I just get up for a bit, drink some water, and then lay in bed for a few hours freaking out about all sorts of things.

Let me know what you all figure out, I've tried various techniques (meditation-types, but it's quite difficult when I get so excited), medicines, etc. Medicines that help me sleep tend to knock me out for a day or two, though, and I don't have normal sleep patterns which affects my rest, too.

My best solution is to go to the beach for a full day. Sun and swimming usually gets me tired, it's just not something I can always go and do, of course.

I got a job sheryl, I work until midnight just about every night now, so I just changed my sleeping patterns so I have a little time to myself everynight after work.

Sheryl, when I was working full time and my day started at 6:00 AM, and I had classes until 9:30 PM 6 days out of the week, I still had the same sleep pattern. So there!

If I can't sleep, I just watch TV until my eyelids droop. Once in awhile my room is too hot (the boyfriend turns up the darn heat) and that really affects me and I cannot sleep. Then the TV goes on, and in an hour or so, I zonk out.
A hot bath at night also helps me, if it is a really chilly night. I also think that if you fill up the whole day with a lot of activity, you'll sleep much better. When I have a day off from work and sit around all day, by nighttime I am not tired, so I gotta push myself during the day to do things!

I'd have to work full time to tire myself out, but I'm taking 6 classes this semester and am not in the position to do that. I need to find a part-time, night job. I know I'll still be wired, though!

Whitney- As soon as that baby gets here you will have no problems getting to sleep and staying asleep......Specially since you will be at it alone........Two things I wish God had given woman before having babies was the abbility to store sleep and to grow two more hands once the baby was born....
Thats just my 2 cents

I'm sure that I'll sleep much easier (and harder) once she gets here. But then again, since I'm not going the formula route(if you catch my drift) I'll be up every two hours to feed her, and somewhere in that day I've still got to get the rest of my normal routine done and deal with her father, which drains me of all energy now. A few months after she gets here I'm heading back to school to change my major and get my RN lisence/degree, then once thats done, I get to work full time AND go back to school to hopefully still make it to med school before I'm 30 AND try to raise my daughter sans reliable biological father. Yay for me!!! I don't need two more hands, Shannon, I need a clone that doesnt require sleep!

Sleep better with a baby around? Shannon, I think you just had a perfect baby... I've never heard someone say they had more sleep around a baby!

I didn't say she would get more sleep I just I said she wouldn't have any problems falling asleep.......Since everyone was talking about there sleep problems and Whitney was one of them I was just saying she wouln't have trouble falling asleep............Now staying asleep is totally up to that little bundle of joy........And I do have a pretty good baby

Usually I wake up every hour, check the time, put my head back down the pillow and than I'm back a sleep again.
