Why are the animals so poorly taken care of? Wouldn't they have better buisness if they had healthy animals?

This has always been an ongoing issue...and I think it's a combination of not wanting to spend money on the right materials and space or training for the caretakers of the animals they have, ignorance, and the fact that care for exotics is not well known (which translates to lack of knowledge or lack of a will to get that knowledge).

The best we could possibly do is kindly make the managers of that department or store aware of the error and hope they have the initiative and care to change. Unfortunately it does not always happen this way. Retail simply doesn't pay very much for their manager to always care that much. It is sad, and we can always hope thing will improve....

(I mentioned KINDLY before because those who come at the managers in a confrontational or negative maner usually cause the manager to ignore everything they just said anyway)

Do you think It would help if we told them what they are doing is wrong. What if we were to pay for the materials they need like water bowls? I saw they have a rose hair tarantula that cant even get water cause the bowl is 5 inches high

I agree with FwoGiz. You can tell them what they are doing wrong in a nice way and hope they will listen, but if you disagree with how they keep them, as hard as it may be, DO NOT buy from them and don't spend your own money to try to help them do something they should already be doing. That would not be good for you to put on your own shoulders.

If you buy from them it only supports them in their bad habits. It's hard to leave those animals in that situation, but if you buy them, then they will only order more and think they are doing the right thing because they are making sales.

EXACTLY my point

sucks but that's how it is
don't encourage such behavior

sometimes petshops will understand tho, I already told some petshops that putting frogs on carpet was bad
the employes told me the boss wanted people to be able to see the animal then I explained that some kid would buy the frog, put it on carpet, let it die this way and they would come back angry or not ever again

instead of just telling them they were doing the bad thing, I gave em a solution that would be good for the petshops, and much better altho not the best for the animal:
I told em that a burrowing frog usually need at least 4-6 inches of COCO fiber, and that you might not see the frog much because of all the people coming by, stressing the animal
I suggested that they use only 1 inch of cocofiber so that people understand this is the appropriate substrate, and they can still see the animal

After 3 years of that conversation, most of the herps there are in better conditions.... altho they still mix species and whatnot

Its because in States like here in MA, you don't need to have a clue. You pay I think $200 and you have a pet store license. TA DA!!!!

I don't think the problem is related to licenses or laws...
It's a consumer problem; people don't make their homework before buying stuffs so they buy shit enabling shitty petshops to stay alive.
look around, there are a few good petshops I am sure of it

Yeah, my local pet store "Petco" treat their animals like trash. The employees don't care for the pets and all they care about is the paycheck :/. I remember seeing two dead whites and they were only babies they were just roting on the ground of the terrarium like trash. Plus they were feeding their pythons crickets >. I tryed to tell them something and they just told me they knew what they were doing.

It does have to do with what I mentioned. People do not need to really have a clue about the care of pets to own a pet store. You can be buisness driven and pay for a liscense and have a pet shop with out knowing proper care of animals. Any jo blow can start up a pet shop with the proper pitch to a bank.

If I walk in there to a bank. Show them my pets,, how I care for them and how I provide proper care. They will say, "Great! Now how are you going to make money to pay for your loans and all that business stuff.

Or if you come in and just talk numbers and how you will make +profit this time and here rahter than talk about if you know how to care for animals. Then you are speaking a banks language. It all comes down to money. This is what banks what to hear. So these people are in better posistions to start a pet shop.

The few shops, stores that do well are Reptile hobbists who see that they want to get into the petshop trade and study buisness and open thier own store. Reptile care is something you learn on your own time for fun. Anyone can go to college for buisness. I hate seeing so many pet stores have no clue what they are doing then when you try to help them they act like they know everything. The ones that are willing to listen are the ones I will support even if they start off shaky. If they are willing to change and listen that is a step in the right direction.
