I have an Alocasia x amazonica in my tank at the moment, but am receiving much in conflicting information about it. Mostly its high light vs low light, mine seems to be doing great under the grow light, it has even flowered, so I must be doing something right. I just wanted to know if anybody knew if it was toxic to the frogs (yeah I know, a little late now that I have it in the tank to be asking that question.) The frogs seem fine and everything, but I ran across at least one reference to it being toxic, and another of it possibly irritating our mucus glands. Just wanted to know if anybody had the story straight. (black jungle sells alocasia in its different forms, so I'm figuring its safe, just wanted to get another opinion)

Hey Daystorm..
I am not sure about "official" answers.. but I can tell you that I use several types of alocasia in my tanks. I have never had any serious problems. I have found that they are very cool plants, they love the light. .and grow like crazy. Never had any trouble getting them to flower.. and they do great in high humidity.

The downfall to them, they grow alot.. with big leaves.. So I have had them suffocate other plants and block the light from them.

As for toxic.. I think they actually are. But I think it is similar to that of a pothos.. meaning that the toxic compounds are found within the sap of the plant. It would only be toxic if ingested.. and could only be ingested if a stem or stalk were to break.

Long and short.. I LOVE em.. and I use them whenever I build a viv and have access to them.

not much help I know.. just letting you know that you not the only "bad" keeper out there with horrible toxic plants in their tanks

lol well that makes me feel alot better. Really, you have been keeping frogs way longer than me, and if nothing has happened to your frogs yet, I'm not going to worry about mine. Thanks Tim!
