Hey, i have a 50 watt red bulb with a metal reflector dome. Im wondering about a couple things...i have a 10 gallon standing on its end (the tall way) and im wondering if the heat will pass through the glass if i place it on top. Also, will the heat of the metal dome crack the glass?

The 50 watt Lightbulb would probably be too hot for the animals inside of a 10 gallon tank but I doubt it would hurt the glass, because isn't glass made from sand or whatever being pushed together in high pressure and heat?

the heat will likely crack the glass if you put it directly on the glass. ive made that mistake once.

the 50 watt might be ok-i would go for a 40 though, just to be safe.

i was thinking it would crack, since i've heard of UTH and heat mats cracking them. i just have a dilema with the tank being upright and no heat source, and my room being really cold in the winter. it only needs to be around 70 (for crested gecko) but by the time i get home from work my room is more like 50-60. not sure what to do. maybe i will just turn the tank right side up again...just deal with the non-height factor. he's only a baby anyway so doesnt need much room yet.

a 50 elevated a few inches from the glass would be fine. Get a couple stips of 1x2, 2x2, or other such to elevate it.

ravencelt Does your dome have the clamp on it? What I did when I had my 29 long up on end was actually clamp the dome to the top front of the screen and angled it in through the front rather than straight from the top. It served two purposes perfectly... 1. Heat and 2. it held the screen top in place LOL

Smart idea-as long as he has the clamp though. Maybe you could position the tank by a heater (reasonable distance) or put it in a room with some more heat? Just common sense really. If you can't get the temperature up above 70's in your home, sad to say but it's not in the animal's best interest to stay there.

Actually some species of herps do best a temperatures below 70, such as fire salamanders and some species of mantellas. And an actual heater would dry out your air and take all the humidity away from your frogs.

amazinglyricist, yes i realized that when i tried that with my space heater. Good to know about the other herps though, thanks! Heather thats a great idea, as i was having trouble with keeping the front closed too, i was tying it with string for the time being. Anyway, i ended up putting the tank the regular way and i plan to move my crested into the bigger tank i have when he gets older.
spawn, for your information, im female, and i really would prefer you not comment on my questions anymore. So far you've been nothing but rude and haven't really said anything thats helped me. Not trying to start any bad blood here, but personally id rather not read what you have to say.
