Dendroboard has more than enough false bottom build threads. Just use the search bar they have

Yeah It sounds like a lot of people use egg Cartons. Could I use a false bottom for a half and half tank?

egg crate which is light diffuser, make some more research, its real basic and common sense
cartons would deteriorate within a day

I looked into it and it seems a lot harder than it sounds. Is this mainly used for frogs requiring high humidity?

I just googled "vivarium false bottom" and I can see several pictures, youtube videos, websites and tutorials on how to!!!!!!!!

I use FB for any animals that requires 50%+ humidity... but is almost a most for 80%+
it depends mostly on what kind of plants you wanna put in there

you just don't want your soil to be sitting in water, you want it to drain hence the false bottom

So would gravel accomplish the same thing?

Yes... but it is MUCH heavier... you might as well use hydrotons AKA hydroballs AKA clay balls... stuff you can find in hydroponic stores.
I personally hate that method... you can hardly use a pump with such a setup since there is less volume of water, so the water stagnates... also still heavier than the eggcrate method, which isn't much more complicated really...

Hey Greene,
Its super simple to make a eggcrate false bottom. Just get PVC connectors (or cut down a PVC pipe) that are about 2-3", cut out notches in the bottom (to prevent water from stagnating in the PVC), cut the diffuser panel, and you are done. In some builds I've siliconed the PVC supports to the bottom of the viv, other times I've drilled a hole in the top of the support and attached it to the eggcrate with zipties. Either way works. Another way to do it is to build a frame with eggcrate (i.e. not using PVC risers at all). A benefit of this is that you can make it slightly smaller than the bottom of the tank. You can then put a layer of gravel between the false bottom and the front of the tank to hide it. Gravel can be a functional drainage layer, but it is quite heavy (especially in larger tanks). I like using hydroton as a drainage layer, but I don't use any type of pumps in my vivs. In my experience, hydroton can be a boon for springtail production within the viv.
Good Luck,
-Field
