2 days ago I bought my first Red Eyed Treefrog. Once I got home I noticed that one eye had a dark brown spot on the pupil. I thought it was a bit of dirt but the following day it got worse and looked like coagulated blood. It's a sort of jello thing covering the eye. I could gently remove a bit of it, but the eye is still the same: brown and opaque.
Is the frog infected or could the eye be damaged inside?
I remember that the guy in the shop accidentally dropped the frog on the floor (actually the frog jumped away). But it landed on his 4 hands like a cat and I thought it was fine.
My other tree frogs did the same before and they are still in perfect health.
But at this point I'm not sure..what can it be and how can I help this poor animal?
Sucks seeing such a beautiful species with a problem like this.

Well first off, welcome to the forum. I would say take him to the vet as soon as possible to have it looked at by a trained professional. I can only guess at what the cause of it is currently. Is there anything in your tank that coulda injured your frogs eye if he was hopping around in the tank, or is it housed with any other herps? It is possible that the frog got injured in the shop when he did that, but if hopped and landed on all fours like you said its possible but not as probable. If you are able to pick off clumps it sounds like his eye was punctured. And I would definitly as I said above take your frog to a vet.

If you do not know a vet that takes care of herps, or would like a listing of other vets that specialize in herps. Here is a site that can help:

Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. I live in Hong Kong, though I'm italian. I have 1 tomato frog and 2 small japanese tree frogs.
I wanted to have a RETF so badly but...you know the rest.

I bought the RETF on tuesday and apart from that jump he didn't hit anything before I noticed that brown spot.
Which means either that jump hurt him or he was wounded before.

I'd like to see a vet but I'm not sure I can find one for frogs in this city. Well, there might be but I have no idea how to find him.
Today I'll take it to the shop for them to see the poor animal.

By the way, I can't feed the poor frog, cos he seems shocked. He sleeps fulltime and won't eat even when I place the cricket on his nose.
What can I do? I'm afraid he's getting weaker and weaker.

i dont think he will eat if you are right there, they like to hunt at night. i agree w/ taking him to the vet, they would be the ones to help, since we dont have the frog in front of us. welcome to the forum. i hope your frogs do well.

Actually I left him with a cricket the whole night but the poor frog simply sleeps, cos this way he can keep is bad eye closed.

I will see if I find a vet. Damn it's so sad to see all this. Imagine such a wonderful animal with a problem like this.

You really need to take the frog back to the store you bought it at. Depends on you before or after you take him to the vet. Vet bills can be costly, but as you should know its responsibility you took on when buying a pet.The poeple in the store may remember you, but I dont know if theyll take the frog back, theyll find anyways around it. I just got my Red Eyes as well, theyre absolutely beautiful. I really hope you have luck with yours!Let us know.

How far of a drop to the floor was it? Possibly the jarring of him hitting the floor could have caused a bit of head tramma. I had this happen to a pet rat I had once. He jumpped off my shoulder and landed on the floor pretty hard (on his feet as well) The next day he was bleeding out of one eye and his nose. I had a vet appointment for him the next day (this would have been three days after the fall) but he never made it in and passed away the night before I could get hom in

Perhaps if you take him back in and explain that he had jumped out of the employees hands. Maybe they will just trade him for another one.

Good Luk

It's a crappy shop.
I went there tonight, they tried to blame me for not being able of taking care of the frog properly. I told them that the frog had that problem the very day I bought it and I own other frogs.
They said they couldn't do anything, they didn't even know how to deal with it.
I left and won't go back there anymore.
Once home the frog had been struggling probably in pain and after inflating his belly he stretched with the mouth open and died.
I had bought it on tuesday.

It's terribly sad, not only seeing an animal dying, but such a beautiful animal.
I'm done with that shop and I will tell everyone about it.
Thanks for the support guys...

Holy s**it!
Not only cats have 9 lives...
Seems that my poor RETF is still alive! Damn, he looked really damn dead for 10 minutes.
Anyway, I don't think these are good news, cos he doesn't look like living for long.
He can't climb anymore, he just stays there with the eyes half open.
If it's not today it's gonna be tomorrow.

I guess it had a brain damage has said above.

I hate to say it, but if you aren't gonna take him to the vet, and you don't think he will make it to tomorrow... It might be best to humanely euthanize him. It's totally your call. There are two ways you could do it humanely. First you could place him in the freezer. The second way that I would say is probably the perfered but emotionally harder, is place a dab of orajel in the palm of your hand and set your frog on top of the dab.

Becki had a good post on here about that, when dana was having a hard time with one of her pac's. I'll see if I can dig up the thread.

oh, that's sad. mmm...I never saw a sick frog, but...I was trying to make a photo and post it here now, but my camera is without batteries.
I wanted to show you how the frog looks like now and what u think about him.
Seems so hopeless.

Which of the 2 methods above is the less painful for the frog?

Don't do it yet, just wait and see, you should have contacted a vet, but if you don't have one, just wait and see.

I wait and see if I find a vet, but it all happened so fast that I think the frog won't make it.

He looks like dying every 10 minutes.
He inflates the belly, and after few minutes he stretches his legs and releases all the air getting very thin and looking 100% dead. His eyes wide open and his pupil (the only one that still works) very big and dilatated (my room is not dark now).

Hi Alechan

That sound like shedding. When a frog shedds it blows up lika a balloon, then deflates thin, then rubs of its skin with its leags. then eats the thin white skin that comes off.

But Im really sorry to hear about his eye. I hope you find a vet soon.

here is a list of hong kong herp vets

Hey, thanks for the list!! It's very precious!

Shedding? How often those "contractions" should be normally?
Cos each step lasts minutes from what I see and the frog looks scary, really dead.

it does sound a little like shedding, and he is probably a little weak from the injury. Find a vet quick.

No...I'm looking for the numbers but the frog is really gone. After the last contraction I mentioned above he doesn't move anymore.
I sprayed him water and push him gently but he just lays there on his belly with his eyes wide open.

I better check those vets to avoid any future surprises from my remaining frogs...

thanks Cate, I took some pics of the poor frog.
I know it's not nice to show him now, but I want you to see his eye and how beautiful he could have been.
Fortunately I live by the pier and I wanna drop the frog in the sea (if they don't see me doing it).

Let me figure out how to put pics here....

U can see how his eye had become and it was worse before I cleaned it yesterday.

Damn, I never imagined I could feel so sad for the loss of a frog, before owning one. Especially for just 3 days. I cared about this little pal.

Of course the photo is worse than the real one. And at this stage his skin was spotted as you can see in the close up.
But he was really shiny green when I bought him.

At least I'm glad he died in my home rather than in that fu**ing shop.

Its a shame to see em go. I live near the ocean too (well the gulf of mexico actually). The only herps I have lost were my skinks, and they are burrowers so I though a burial was more befitting for them. What do you mean "If they don't see you?" Is it illegal?

hmm...donno if it's illegal, but they might think I'm polluting the water, as some people do throwing cans and bottles.
But I'll take my time and drop him in the water when nobody sees me.
I'll do it tomorrow.
