HELP! HELP! HELP! I spent the first 13 years of my life in a nice little rancher on 19 acres of woods/swamps that sit upon a beautiful lake with a nice big island in the middle. Well all sides of the lake are surrounded by condominiums and apartment buildings. Anyways...on the 19 acres was my family and one more elderly couple in another house about 2 acres away from mine. Well due to rough times we had to move out of the house in the woods and a developer bought it and the 19 acres(Gee, I wonder why). Im afraid that when the older couple that lived in the other house dies he will buy that property and build more condos(he built/owns the ones that surround the rest of the lake)I know for a fact that there are all kinds of wild life....anything from fish to lizards to deer to bullfrogs and tree frogs and I even remember seeing peacocks and wild turkey. Well I put this on the urgent board because if somethings going to be done it has to start now but being 17(not even old enought o vote) I dont know where to start....please help, please!,,,I dont wanna see the place I grew up or the homes of what could possibly be hundreds of toushands of animals turned into condominium complexes!

i feel your pain and i hate not being able to do anything about it. But unfortunately you probably wont be able to until they buy the other property or start building on the 19 you owned. If you start a petition or something, anythign is better then nothing,I will certinaly help you in anyway possible.

thanks that means alot, and to start a petition, do you have to have it written up by a lawyer and or judge from the town or can you just do it yourself?

darn i took law class a year ago but its mostly blurry to me now but im trying to think of what i learned. you may want to try to talk to your state representative.there are 12 in each state and most of them will take the time to talk to you if you have an office close by.what state are you in? i would say to go talk to your representative, becaus eif anyone is goign to listen to you it should be him(thats how mine is atleast) you could do a petition but unless you have someone in a higher position behind you its not worth too much, not a lawyer or a judge, but soemone more like a mayor, govorner or representative.ill do whatever i can to help you, just let me knwo what youd need.

I would talk to your city, and state representatives. You could get a meeting with them and state your position. Your mayor. You could also try to get meetings with your state senator and congressmen. Just make sure you have all your information together before the meeting; it'll make it easier. Preparation is everything. Make some petition forms. If possible get a lawyer to print them up. Get friends, family, classmates, teachers, anyone you know that feels the same way you feel about your statement. Canvas the local area. Mention to them how it affects them too. E.g. "By turning this property into condominiums. Do you know how that will effect the neighborhood?" Even talk to the people in the condominiums. They might enjoy watching the wildlife that lives on your property. You could turn the property into protected land. Or a park. I know personally I would rather see the property turn into a park where people coould enjoy the lay of the land still. I would even proposition people putting swings and slides there and making it a really nice park. Picnic benches, maybe some grills. Proposition fish stocking and fishing. The house could be turned into a baitshop or caretakers house. After you petition it get it notarized. In the chicago area you could even get notizing done at the banks. That step isnt hard. I would say you need 500-1000 names depending on the size of your town. That's my input. Good luck. Any questions mail me.

There must be a way to make it a nature preserve. I dont know if greenpeace ( http://www.greenpeace.org/ ) or World Wildlife Federation ( http://www.wwf.org/ ) would get involved but its worth a try. Maybe if they dont have the money, you could organize a fund-raiser to help them. Im sure there are plenty of people in you neighborhood that would be willing to contibute. Just throwing some suggestions out there.

You probably don't want to hear this... But there is probably nothing you can do.

Especially with George Bush as President. But even with a more liberal pres... it would still have a tough time.

I just know this from what happened here in Marina Del Ray. The Marshlands were pretty much axed out. About 3/4 of it. Turned into a city which will house about 200,000 people.

Only about 1/4 the marshlands are saved... it's about the only "open" space here in L.A. left. It's in the middle of the city, and about the only natural real habitat here.

People protested back in the late 90's 2000. One guy even went on a hunger strike... and died.

^Hey there^

Fund raiser would be aces. But you have to check and see if there are any permits required to do that in your area. I almost got arrested for collecting donations for a fund that was not permitted. (and no it wasnt a scam job but thats how they keep the scam jobs lower).

Hey Spydergirl4594, I am also from philly....what part are you from? email me at zoinks768@care2.com if you wanna chat more.

I'd love to help as well. I live across from a good chunk of woods that is sorta threatened, but nothing has been built ...yet...is also home to tons of wildlife, including deer, wild turkey, owls, fox and many more...

Another good idea is to write an editorial to your paper. I have had 3 articles published in the Northeast times here in Philly about all kinds of stuff. You could also try and go to your civic meetings for your county and encourage others in your area to attend. (if there are any)

After fighting for over 10 years to have nothing build where I live, the woods still stand, partially because the woods are also home to an abondoned mental hospital that is more of a problem to demolish then to build on the land! ha!~

Another thing maybe is that you coudl contact petitions.com and see if they will sponsor your problem...i could check into that for you as well. I sign petitions all the time. You could make make one of your own and go door to door and get people to sign it?

oh duh, just read the other posts...sorry for repeats...

I know a lot of animal and forest friendly people who would be willing to help.

Too bad no one can contact these guys! ha!

http://www.earthliberationfront.com/news/

This organization targeted a housing development in Northeast Philadelphia in January after they plowed down forest and build homes. Their revenge? Burning down some homes and destroying their construction equipment making it more of a pain to build the home on the land they bulldozed...
