My frog Tony is very sick. He fell from my hand during a cage cleaning about a month ago, and acted strangely since.

Now he is severely bloated, and underside is red. I have been giving him tetracycline soaks, and rept-aid, but no improvement. I am certain he is not going to make it.

What should I do? I can't afford to take him to the vet!!

Hello heather, welcome to TheFrog.Org. It sounds more like redleg to me. Becki has experience with this I believe. Her site is http://www.froggie.info, she has a section on redleg there also.

This is the little bit of info I have on my site.

Red Leg
Red Leg is caused by the parasite Aeromonas hydrophila, and is commonly found with unsanitary environments, overcrowding, cold temperatures, and other stress factors. It is highly contagious and fatal.

Symptoms
Lethargy, bloating, lack of appetite, muscular twitches, convulsions, or paralysis, and particularly a reddening of the skin. Especially on the belly and the underside of the legs due to enlarged and broken capillaries. Do not confuse with abrasions suffered during travel or shipping.

Treatment
As with all infected animals they should be quarantined. In the early stages, this may be treated at home with a medicated bath in a Sulfamethiazine solution (15ml for every 10L of water), or a 2% solution of copper sulfate or potassium permanganate. This bath should be given daily for two weeks. In severe or advanced cases, tetracycline should be administered orally at 50mg/kg twice a day. A veterinarian may recommend Baytril at 20 mg/kg administered orally, or metronidazole given at 50-100 mg/kg.

Sound familiar?

I personally do not recommend treating an animal that is sick on your own without at least consulting a professional veterinarian that specializes in herps.

You can find a local one to contact at Http://www.ARAV.com (Association of Reptile and Amphibian Vererinarians).

I am fairly certain, that he will not make it too much longer. My trusted pet store reference suggested euthanasia...any advice?

for euthanizing which might be in your pets best interest; the most humane method is to put a blob of orajel in the palm of your hand and place your frog on top of the blob. After he has expired you can place him in the freezer overnight to finish.

I personally am not 100% positive what the orajel does to the frog. Whether that is the only required step or if it just numbs them so that they dont feel the cold. I havent had to do it yet, knock on wood.

As becki suggested once to Dana: you can use this time to tell him how much he has meant to you, how much he has taught you, and how much you loved him.

Heather, I would need to know more specifics about his care and set up all along and what his sympyoms started out being and have progressed to in order to give you my best opinion about what you should do. It does sound like your frog could possibly have redleg but this would not be caused by a fall. If you can give me the whole long story of it all, I'm more than happy to have the time to read it all - I just don;t want to tell you to euthanize your frog unless I know more the specific circumstances. If you would rather e-mail me in private, feel free - or if you'd like to chat and have MSN messenger e-mail me as well to set that up (sometimes it's easier and quicker that way to answer questions and cover all the bases at once), here's my mail
beckinelson@webtv.net and I'm happy to help as much as I can.

how do we know it's not fair? heatherposer only you know if your froggie is truly suffering or not. as i was told once, " you and only you will know when and if the time is right. " and the orajel method wes mentioned is the only humane way i know of.

i know what it's like to have a sick pet, i hope your are okay in this time and if you do need to vent just post. we are more than happy to be here for you.

I agree with Dana completely. If you are sure that he is suffering, you should put him to sleep and end the agony. If he is bloated as you said, he could be in kidney failure and this is extremely painful for the frog and can go on for quite some time before it in itself causes death. There are many factors to consider, if you need to walk through each one, as Dana said, we're here and more than happy to. If you know it's time, then it is time. The oragel is the best way to do it, the freezer is an option after but not a must nor one that I chose. And I'll say to you what Henry said to me and I to Dana when we were in your shoes, "As you hold him in your hand, tell him you're sorry that you couldn't do more but that you loved him and did all that you could and thank him for teaching you what he has along the way." I'm sorry you're being faced with this. If there is anything more I can do, feel free to ask.

I was in no way saying that euthanizing was needed yet. I was just giving information on the questions to the best of my ability.

well, I put him down last night, and it sucked. he was suffering so badly i just couldn't watch it anymore. i made him a little coffin, and cried the whole time. the orajel method did seem to cause him some pain, and it was heinous. now i only hope that Paulie will not get sick.

Sorry to hear that, Heather.
I know what it means, happened to me few weeks ago with my RETF.

Fortunately he died on his own, cos it would have been too damn sad to euthanaze him.

I'm sorry to hear that he is gone. Maybe he is chillin in some rainforest up there, and thinking about his days when he was with someone who loved him and took care of him.

When I lost my skinks I burried them together right outside my door so they would still be close to me.

I'm sorry your frog went through that. It's truly terrible to hear it when it happens, but we all know it does. Again, I'm sorry for your pain and your pets.

In my opinion, sounds like your frog had gotten "redleg" also known as frog wasting disease. It could have come from a number of factors. So your dropping him was not necessarily a contributing factor. They say it can be from unclean cages, but I had a horned frog who died of it a few months ago, and his cage was immaculate. could even be brought in frrom a food source. I know it has to do with normally-prsent bacteria build ing up to unsafe levels in the frog, due to stress, immune deficiencey or a dirty cage. But I feel your pain; I had my horned frog on treatment after vetting him, and he still died. Yes, very red and bloated. I hate to lose them, though most people would scoff at the idea of a frog dying being sad, I hear you. I am tearing up in the eyes just thinking about it

you did the right thing heather, it takes a very strong person to get over themselves and the pain of loosing a pet to help that pet out of their pain. and you can be sure that when they can't help themselves they need your help... even if it comes to putting them down.

im so very sorry for your loss
