Hi everyone. I am having an extremely difficult time deciding if it's time to euthanize my white's (via orajel), and was wondering if I could get any other advice or opinions on what to do.

About four month's ago my 4 year old white's tree frog developed a tumor in his vocal/throat area. It is for sure a tumor and not any kind of fluid retention. After he developed the tumor, he seemed to start started having a hard time swallowing his food, but he was still able to get it down somehow. But he has gotten progressively worse since then.

Because of the tumor in is throat, he now seems to get air trapped in his vocal sac and belly because he frequently does a weird gulping action when he moves, and I can hear and see air being expelled. He also seems to have lost most ability to be able to swallow his food, and has lost his appetite. The only way I can get him to eat is to either force feed him or to sneak the food in his mouth when he opens his mouth to do the gulp thing. And even after I have gotten it into his mouth the food kind of just sits in there for a while because he can't seem to swallow it all the way down. He has lost a lot of weight.

The whole thing has been very stressful for me, and I assume it has been even more stressful for him being force fed and all.

I just don't know if I should continue to try to feed him, or take him to the vet, or if it is just time to put him down. But I don't really think there is anything a vet could do now. I hate having to make this decision, and some insight would be helpful. Thank you.

just put yourself in his position... would you want to be forced fed just to stay alive when your body is shutting down?

there is a large risk that he would die during surgery, as anesthetics are not often used on amphibians with great success.

personally, I would put him down. it sounds as though he is suffering.

If he were in the wild, he would have died by now.. you are only prolonging the inevitable.. sorry

You are right. I hate having to do it, but it is best for him. Thank you!

How long will it take before the orajel works?

Orajel is not a humane method. If you have ever seen them squirm like they are on fire after using it you will agree.

You can get MS-222 at any fish store. Give them an overdose of that and it will be all over.

Alright, I will try that. Thanks!
