So I went to the pet store today, I know, I know, but I went in to buy some black skirt tetras for my aquarium. As I was waiting for the guy to scoop my fish out, I saw these big ol' eyes in a small critter keeper, surrounded by other critter keeps full of tarantulas. I've never bought any of my reptiles from pet stores, and I know "rescuing" isn't really smiled upon, but I had to get this guy.
The label said "Big eyed Tanzanian tree frog", but I wouldn't be surprised if he was something else, not even close. I set him up in a 20 gal, and took some pictures. Can anyone identify/ confirm what species he is so I can get more accurate care?

If I were you, I'd get some fatty things in that frog and fast. I could be mistaken, but it looks horribly underweight? Maybe some silkworms to help the appetite.

Like everyone said, it's polypedates leucomystax. Wow, that's a pretty grotesque labeling screw up. different continents. I've seen some dandies, before though. I bought a milk frogs as "Giant Cave Frog, largest treefrog in the world!!!!!!!!!!". I'll have to remember a couple other's and post them!

Cute little dude (or dudette). I had a neat little pink/orange male for a long time. Congrats. -JK

I doubt it's a screw up as much as a cashing in. Leptopelis sp. seem to be getting more popular, so they probably called it that on purpose to cash in.

Sometimes it's not the petstores fault for the mislabeling. Sometimes their supplier list them as something else, and the petstores will order them in thinking it's one thing and get something completly different. Chances are the staff won't know the difference between a tree frog and a toad, so they will get labeled whatever the supplier told them it was.

I think it was the supplier, everything else in the store was "correct", and this guy was up on a shelf forgotten in the corner, I don't think they expected to sell him. I go there for the freshwater fish, and this is the first time they've had frogs. He was only 10 bucks, and I figured he'd enjoy a 20gal more than a .5gal critter keeps surrounded by tarantulas
He/she is sleeping right now, I assume they're nocturnal but he/she must be worn out.

Well at least you got him for a good price. If one of the pet stores in my area had a "big eyed tree frog" listed, correct or not, they probably would be asking around $80 for him.

Do you have pictures of him all set up in his new 20?

Aww what a cutie. Good price too. They get as big as cubans right? So the 20 should be great for him. How big is he now?

Be carefull feeding frogs mealworms. There is much more hard shell to them then meat. Plus frogs don't really chew them like a Leopard Gecko would. Superworms have less of a shell and lots more meat to them. They are also fatty so don't feed too much.

OMG! di0rd0ll i must have JUST missed you at petland! Thats where you got him isnt it! lol... My fiancee and i were there yesterday and took a look at him but we had already bought one of their "big eyed tanzanian tree frogs" and discovered it was a golden tree frog (if you doubt it go look at the goldens at petsmart, they are identical lol) I had already told the pet guy TWICE that the frog was labeled wrong and that its cost should not be higher than $15 but he didnt listen lol...

They are lots of fun... and they really enjoy crickets so fill him up!

Did you see the HUGE green frog under the snakes? the one thats the size of a full hand? lol... he is cute too!
