well i ve been to afghanistan twice 7monthes each, and each time it was pretty hard to find people to care for my animals..
the first time i had a dog, and a few frogs
the second time, i had MORE frogs...
now its simply crazy... it would be easier for me to tell you what i dont have !!

and then, its my girlfriends time for a happy trekkin in afghanistan and im leaving 3 weeks tomorow to join her in thailand for her break holiday and damn..... its even harder to find someone for 3 weeks
someone gotta come during day to feed the darts, the day gecko, the beardie... the cockatiel
but then someone gotta come during night to feed the pacman, the baby gecko leo... all those random frogs and various herps
then i have to explain them that the frog need their food dish at the same spot every day...
that they need to keep their veggies leftovers for my colonies to eat too...
then they re asking me "Your bird eats veggies??"
sigh...

it would be easier too if i didnt have half vivariums, and half terrariums
gosh i now finally understand how crazy and addictive this hobby is
so many things that i dont even have to think about anymore with all these years of caring and reading

at least im leaving with ONLY one baby animal that isnt top shape ;( lets hope he make it but i fear he wont :X
skinny 4inch long giant day gecko... feeding melanogastor, small crix, tiny dubias, bean weevils but i dunno ;x
any advice?

big up to all you froggers
wish me a nice trip AND GOOD LUCK! -_-

My day geckos LOVED honey, tropical baby food, mashed bananas and occasionally a lid of the powdered day gecko food as well as live bugs. But they seemed to like the honey and baby food best.

Mine pair managed to keep nice and plump AND produce an egg or two for me every 3 - 4 weeks! (I worked at a reptile shop at the time and had a breeding pair)

Have you checked the news paper for pet sitters? Maybe there is someone in your area? I see people listing on craigslist all the time offering themselves for pet sitting. Though it sounds like you just need someone to stay at your place LOL

If you were close to me, I'd happily do it for ya!

Hope that you find someone reliable! And enjoy your time with your girl!!!

its funny cause i had bought banana+mange baby food to try it out... I bet he ll like that.. i ll let my friend know to give him some, along with honey
are these things really nutricious for him tho? i thought he really needed bugs since he was a baby

hmm, here in quebec, there arent any pet sitters for exotic pets like frog
i can even tell you that i know pretty much all of the froggers 200km around my place ;P they re all too far or people without cars! i live a tiny bit remotely for someone without a car
heather, you want to move at my place for a while? ;) i bet your kids will be happy, im sure they love zoos!

nk, my best bet really was that friend of mine.. pretty much the only one i have around there...
he lives on the other side of the saint Lawrence river but he works 15min away from my place so i guess im lucky + he s the most knowledgeable person about my zoo after my gf
then there are my gf's dad+bro that are coming too but YEAH X_O if you would see their face when i try to teach them how to feed the beardie... so there is no way they would fill two dozens of dubias dish :P

tx for the tip!

Insects make up the bulk of their diet... but they also feed on nectar and pollen (baby food and honey are the replacements) It rounds out their diets nicely. You will want to be sure to change the baby food out daily (if not sooner) before it gets rancid and starts attracting fruit flies LOL But yes, it is quite good for them and I think you may start to see a bit of a difference in them after a couple weeks It is also very important for them to get D3 vitamin as well... the calcium and phosphorus are essential for metabolic and digestive reasons. (I really miss my Day Geckos!!!)

Glad you have someone to stop by. If it wasn't THOUSANDS of miles away, I'd be more than happy to stop by with my girls and feed the Zoo LOL (My 10 year old LOVES critters and can't wait for me to get frogs again LOL)

When I went on holiday, I typed up care sheets on how to do things for all the animals. My care sheets weren't like the ones you find in books, but it included things like:
Location in the house of the tank, size of the tank, how many animals were in each tank, humidity/temps for that tank, how often the animals should be fed. Also had information like location/description of cleaning supplies, how to make tap water safe, what to do if something dies, my vets info, etc..
I did a master list, and it was about 3 pages typed. The other thing I was planning on doing was tape a list to each of the tanks on how to care for that particular tank.

Then to feed them, I had all the food pre-portioned out all ready.

So, I have Ziplock baggies, mini Ziplock type baggies, Mini Cricket Keepers from the dollar store, and Deli Containers (2oz, 16 oz, 32 oz sizes).

This worked out pretty well for all my critters. The Ziplock bags worked great to portion out the frozen shrimp for my big fish, 2 oz deli containers worked great to portion out fish flake food for my smaller fish, and for my Crested Gecko Diet (for the Cresties).

The Small Cricket keepers and the 16 & 32oz deli containers work really great for all sorts of feeders, roaches, crickets, super worms, etc. (just be sure to put food in them and air holes.)
But this worked pretty good for my pet sitters, because they didn't have measure anything or count out (touch) the bugs, they mostly just had to dump everything in each of the tanks.
