Our local rattlers are restricted to a very, very, few locales. They are declining, and are inevitably killed on sight.

That sucks I just saw on a Oregon tourism site that if found in your camp you are better off killing them.... Is Crotalus oreganus the only species of rattler or do you have others?

Although the outcome sucks nice pics I'd prolly would've slapped that dumbass though and made the macho person who killed it feel like an ass. Nothing like turning Drill SGT mood on lol.
