hello all, so recently i got a whites dumpy tree frog(about 5 days ago) and he wont eat, he constantly hides(except for late at night like 1am where i might see him out on top of his water fountain) and he also seems to be afraid of my hand. I have tried feeding him large crickets, small crickets and earth worms but he wont eat any! he even pushes them away when i try to feed him with tweezers. One thing i am happy about is i heard him croaking a little last night but only for a couple seconds. Another weird thing is since i got him, he has shed like 3 times. the weird thing is that when i take him out and handle him he seems happy and climbs my arms and climbs all over my room.anyways i was just wondering if anyone could give me some good tips on what to do because i really love this little guy and don't want him to die.

If you got an adult and paid under $60.00 then you likely have a wild caught frog, who in the wild knows that when something grabs him it wants him for dinner. Also they are nocturnal, he should not be kept awake during the day. It sounds like if you keep handling ,touching, poking, him the stress will eventually cause his demise. Leave him alone in his cage for a few weeks, look but no touch! Also frogs shed and eat their skin daily as they wake up for their active cycle.

Some of my new pets have taken over 2 weeks before they will start to eat regularly. Just give him some space, he needs time to adjust.

If you are going to be leaving crickets to roam around his tank, make sure you put some food in for the crickets to eat. If the crickets get hungry they may start harassing your "Dopey".

I have 4 Whites Tree Frogs, 2 I got from Petsmart, the first one took him almost 2 months before he was eating regularly. (he came with a bad parasite problem), the other one, she took almost a month before she'd eat for me, she was really shy.
The other two, I bought were really little, and were good eaters.

If I may make a suggestion, read and study the Chytrid thread on this site by Wickerstone, it is very good, and unfortunately most import Whites come down with it. Also, I am so confident in my previous statement you may want to purchase the meds ahead of time. I hope I am wrong. Bill

Why don't you post your temps and humidity? Also pictures of your frog and the tank he is kept in. Remember frogs are look but don't touch pets. They do get stressed out easily and will stop eating. Read the care articles on him and make sure you are meeting his requirements. He should be allowed to sleep undisturbed all day and he will wake up only at night and you should keep it completely dark for him. Make sure he has plenty of branches and plants to climb and hide in. Place a cricket bowl in his cage every night and then count the crickets in the morning. I would also let a few roam around the cage. Keep the cricket bowl near his water bowl so he will see them. Check for poop around the cage in the morning and if you see poop then its a good guess he is eating. DO NOT sit there with a flash light and try to watch him at night. Let him settle in and then he will gradually get use to you. Most frogs are spooked easily when they go into a new enclosure...give him time and complete quiet and darkness at night. No poking, picking up, or staring contests with him. Frogs can stare for a long time and never move.. they will always win. Eventually he will see you as the Cricket GOD and he will look forward to when you open up his cage to bring crickets. Rember only live crickets and put them into the tank just after lights go off. Clean out water bowls in the day time when he is asleep and do it very quietly and gently so not to wake him. Once he is settled in you'll be amazed how eager he is to see what you're up to. Again, post pictures and temps and humidity if you can.

I currently dont have a thermometer or humidity gauge but im going out shopping for some tomorow. As for the pictures of the set up, im new to the site and i dont see any upload button for me to add pictures but if someone can tell me how i sure will! also GOOOD NEWS, dopey has happily accepted his crickets today and i am no longer worried about his condition, he was climbing about the tank today and was not afraid when i opened his tank. I believe i will be the cricket god to him soon, i hope :P

not all frogs accept hand fed bugs...
currently 5 of my 6 male wtf accept hand feeding...

if it dont want to, you are causing them stress when trying to
so dont push you luck because just like bill said, stress is probably the #2 frog killer after chytrid

When I got my WTFs one ate the first day in front of me. The other would have nothing to do with it. So I simply left him alone and figured he would eat when he was hungry. Sure enough about 2 weeks later when I went to dump crickets in the tank he looked at me like oh yeah and went nuts. Ate 4 riht away. Now he knows when I turn off the "sun" and put the red light on its feeding time. He climbs down fro his branches and waits on his log for me. It is super cute.

Some one mentioned a cricked bowl. What is this? And how do you keep crickets in it? When I feed my WTFs I just throw the in the tank. Hardly ever are there any left over by morning, there may be a stray one or two, but if there is a way to keep the in a bowl I would love that! But not if its involves pulling off legs or something like I have seen others suggest on forums. YUCK!

A cricket bowl is just a small glass dish roughly two inches deep. Push it down into the soil to recess it a little bit. The crickets can't climb the glass and believe it or they're too stupid to jump out. And no leg pulling involved. No roaming crickerts to get lost and die in your tank.

well now its been about a week and a half since ive gotten him and he is eating now! i havent been trying to hand feed him or use tweezers, i just drop them in and let him hunt them:P and sure enough he gets em. The only thing i dont like is that he isnt very active at all and most of the time only sits in one spot(even at night, i know hes sleeping during the day). But ive accepted that i have to be patient and he will get more used to me and hopefully he will liven up

his tank temperature is around 79-82 during the day and 72-75 at night, and i mist his tank at least twice a day so i dont think its his environment. here are some pics of his tank and dopey hes sleeping up in the corner of the tank.

What kind of sustrate is that? It looks to have chunks in it and sharp edges. These guys should only have cocofiber or papertowel. No moss either as they are quite feisty eaters and will eat the susbstrate on accident causing impaction. He looks quite plump

Why kiss a frog to turn into a Prince, when you can kiss a Prince to turn into a frog! ?

I would say he needs alot more hiding spots as well. I have a ton places for mine to hide in (fake plants) I need to get some real plants Iin there to help with there have one for now and plan on more. But I do have plenty of the fake ones for them to hide in and feel secure. So I would say go get some stuff for the guy to hide behind, even if its the fake vines you can buy at the pet store. I bet you will have a happier froggie.
