hello people question on fruit flies again. so this is going to sound stupid, but it is because i have almost no experience with them. i understand that the ff lay their eggs in the media at the bottom. i also read it is food for the babies. is it also food for the adults? do i need them to feed them friut or whatever? is my resaerch correct? thanks in advance. getting a d. hydei culture today so i can get some experience before starting darts. i also watched a video on youtube saying you can seperate some of the babies after 2 weeks and start a new culture. can you breed the babies??

The hydei cultures only produce once a month. If you are going to be keeping darts, you may want to order a second culture of hydei that will produce mid month or get the Melo's, they produce every two weeks.

Do you have a Fruit Fly Medium recipe in mind already? or are you buying premade medium?
If you are using a recipe, Hydei like "Brewer's Yeast", so adding an extra bit of that to the recipe will be good for them. Also, they do not like too much vinegar, one of my dart frog books says when you culture them if the recipe is 50% water and 50% vinegar for the liquid part, it's too much for them, so lessen the vinegar part and increase the water amount

The adult flies will eat the same medium as the maggots do.

What kind of egg laying medium will you be using? Most people will use Excelsior (aspen shavings) from the dollar/craft store or Coffee filters. However the flies aren't too fussy, they just like something dry to pupate on.

i also watched a video on youtube saying you can seperate some of the babies after 2 weeks and start a new culture. can you breed the babies?

My experience with the hydei FF is that they only breed once per month. Bascially it takes one month for the adult flies to lay their eggs, the eggs to hatch, the maggots to grow, the maggots turn into a pupae, and then for the pupae to hatch and turn into flies. Then you take part of the new flies from the culture and make new cultures with it (50-100 flies per new culture) and you feed off the rest.
You will want to keep 5-10 cultures on hand to maintain a food supply for the dart frogs

oh i'm sorry i meant melos! its just that i can never pernounce that and hydei is soooo much easier to say. long day of lisining to teachers yapping constantly as well . the culture i bought has medium on the bottom so that is what i will use for now but for the new cultures i don't have a recipe yet. any suggestions? hopefully i will get the darts in a week or 2. and hopefully they wont run out cause i want the vittatus sooo badly. when my dad got the ff he called me and says "matthew i don't know how good this container is. i see no fruit flies and there are a bunch of these ant type thing crawling around" . oh dad, he knows so much about football, but when it comes to animals, he can't tell a dart frog from a panda.
