Hello everyone! I purchased a ball of blackworms for my ADFs yesterday. My little guys have been pigging out on them! There's still a ton more. How long will these live in my tank (78 degrees, 10 gal, large size gravel)? They all burrowed down and poke their heads up until one of my frogs come along and slurps them up. Do these guys make a good staple, or should I only get them once in awhile? I've been feeding them thawed blood worms but I have to stir the water several times to get my frogs to eat. I like how my guys can see these wiggle on their own.

they should be refrigerated and if you buy a very fine screen ( cant remember where i got mine at but i can find the link for you) they should be rinsed daily. Also try not to overfeed as it will mess up the water pretty fast. Other than that i believe they have a high protein content etc which is very good. I'm always a fan though of live feeders versus commercial dried or frozen. Blackworms are much safer than blooodworms i have heard as well. Cant recall but i think i had a discussion on dendro that bloodworms even frozen could be potential carriers of chytrid as they are collected in the dirtiest of places etc. Dont hold me to it however unless i can search and pull the thread up. I used to buy those worms by the lb. Dart frog tads really grow big on them when they are put into their diet. I am guessing fully submersed tho they have a limited lifespan like any worm???

I wish i had some cute little ADF's. All i have ever gotten have died within a week. However i cant keep a goldfish alive either! I have one living glow fish that has survived neglect on my part by eating the algae and live plants in my tank while hubby was in and out of hospital ( no worries getting spoiled now) and a bunch of red cherry shrimp that have multiplied in that tank. thats about it.

so bloackworms=good IMO

also here is a great article on how to culture them yourselves. thought wow. what a great idea huh? as they can get spendy. i believe by this method they reproduce asexually sounds like a fun experiement to me. then refrigerate what you need for storage. http://www.simplydiscus.com/library/foods_nutritio ns/livefood_cultures/blackworms_cultures.shtml

I won't need to worry much longer. >__< I'm down to one ADF and I don't think I'll have him long. Fricken PetCo gave me horrible advice and I've pretty much lost everything.

petco will refund you if you bring them in within 14 days. one thing i would always do with adf is prolly do the chytrid treatment.

I got them from another store, and that was over 2 weeks ago. No one told me about the ammonia spike with new tanks until it was all to late. -_-
