Is there a difference between the black or golden variety of D. Hydei? Going to be feeding to Red Eyes.

Thanks!

i would use crix to be honest for red eyes even newly morphed. Can you get a hold of appropriate sizes, even pinheads? For hydei, black produce faster and i found goldens produced more. I always liked the goldens. Kristy

I agree with Kristy. I would go with pinheads if you can get them over the hydei.

I haven't actually kept the golden hydei but I've heard they are a lot slower producing than the black variety.
The person I regularly get flies and media from claims his golden hydei produce just as fast as the black though. So far his media and flies have been great. (and cheap!)

The red eyes are about 1 1/4" - - morphed in May. They are on a steady diet of 1/4" crickets. Would love to feed off some of my roaches (discoids) but the tiny ones are such a pain to try to catch in quantity (I'm still a bit skidish over the whole raoch thing) Not to mention I don't think I want to risk escapees. Am just looking to give them some variety in their diet.

Thanks for the advice!!

All hydei look the same when dusted... and with baby TFs I always dust them!

But.... while I love hydei, I use them only as a suppliment and because I have them. I wouldn't go out of my way to culture them for baby RETFs. Crickets and roaches are a better way to go, even as babies. Non-climbing roaches are awesome since you can just dump them in a glazed or glass bowl and not worry about them getting out. I like the lateralis since I can raise them much like crickets and hatch them out seperately, but a set of sorting buckets are great for discoids.

If they are already eating 1/4" crix you are already beyond the size for feeding hydei anyways (1/8") they may just ignore them.
