Tiger salamanders are not native to California. Do not try tiger salamanders unless the pond is inside. I know that California has had problems in the past with animals being introduced into the wild from the pet trade (african clawed frogs, bullfrogs, etc.) and even though tiger salamanders probably wouldn't do much damage it is still taking a big risk. There was a subspecies of tiger salamander native to California but they were given full species status a while ago. They are also extremely endangered and you won't find them for sale.

Oh ok I didn't realize that that species was put on the cites listing. Sorry. My fault. Ok I got my field guide out and I'll give you the scientific names of species in Cali. Taricha granulosa granulosa, Taricha granulosa mazamae, Taricha rivularis, Taricha torsoa torsoa, Taricha torsoa sierrae. There are some moer, but these actually would stick closer to your pond. If your pond is small and veiwable and nothing gets into it and you raise the sides a bit so nothing could get out you could try Axolotls. They are fully aquatic, but also may not be allowed in Cali. I'm not sure. Personally i would suggest some species of frog os turtle for your pond if you want something to breed there and stay near.

If you have a fiberglass/plastic ornamental pond, chances are that they aren't going to stay. Also, unless you plan to go out and catch the inteded newt or salamander, your not going to have much luck. Do not buy a salamander or newt from a petstore(even if it is native), to put in your pond, same goes with frogs. The best thing that you can do would be to create a newt/salamander oasis(running stream, shallow part of pond to enter from, plenty of pondweed/plants, no bullfrogs, no fish, or atleast no large ones, muddy bottom, etc.) doing this depends on your space, time and money. Also, even if you were to have newts/salamanders, they will most likely be eaten by pond fish, and will be very secretive. The information you gave was also lacking, like what part of California, what the surrounding area is like, how big the pond is, etc. I'm pretty sure that your most likely in this for conservation, and I applaud you for it. Just letting you know that I'm not trying to attack you.
