So I went to the Hamburg,PA expo and I just HAD to get a pixie! I am hoping it's not a dwarf. I have looked at pictures and to me it's a giant, but if you can tell please let me know, and male or female? My pixie doesn't have a name yet since I want to know the sex. Thanks again!!

Definitely a giant. But it is way too small to tell the sex. Congrats on the coolest species around.

Fingers crossed it's male.

Really cool frog. I want a giant so bad but they never show up for sale at the pittsburgh shows and mail order is not an avenue I want to pursue.

How do you differenciate giant from dwarf?
also, why do you think male is better? Don't female get bigger?

Giants have three stripes and the dwarfs have only one as babies. Also general body and head shape are different.

Males get MUCH larger than the females.

Nothing wrong at all with mail order as long as you know who you are dealing with. Almost every frog I have kept has been through the mail.

so as babies, they have green stripes, 3=giant, 1=dwarf
but if they're adult, you can't tell via the stripes but by the very obvious size I guess?

Yes, your math is correct on the stripes.

Dwarfs will also keep the stripe as adults and have very yellow bellies. Most giants lose the stripes fairly early in life.

And then the size of course.

Dwarf Pyxies:
I love Pyxies of all types, but Dwarfs are my favorite. Dwarf are great, and they do make excellent pets. Maybe not as "brag worthy" as a male Giant, but any Pyxie is better then not having one.

Female Dwarf. Notice how she has very little yellow coloring around the throat.
This little girl came all the way from Mozambique, Africa.

Male Dwarf. Notice how he has a lot of yellow coloring around the throat.

Other type of Pyxie Frog:

This Pyxie is not a "giant" and is not a "dwarf". It was sold to me as a giant. It has 3 stripes just like the juvenile Giants do, but the stripes are yellow, not bright green.

Funny. nI was trying to work a deal with as guy last night who said he had a giant to part with. When I finally got a picture it sure looked way too much like my dwarf. As in exactly like it. Was so bummed out about it.

Thanks Megan, I like to make sure that my pets have a decent set up, but I try not to do anything too elaborate, just in case they have to be ripped down.
Unfortunately the frogs in those pictures and videos have all died. The 15 gallon tank that housed the "unknown" pyxie now houses my juvenile giant pyxie, and the 72 gallon tank that housed my group of dwarfs, now houses my female Leopard Geckos.

The "unknown" species of pyxie with the 3 yellow stripes was a pet shop frog, I had two, the first one came in with an eye infection and died a couple of days after I got it, the second one "lived" for about 9 months or so before it died. It never really did well though. I figured it just "failed to thrive" or something like that. He never grew much, and stayed just under 3" in size. He wasn't a big eater though, and that may have had something to do with it. I also didn't have a heat lamp on his tank, and I probably should have. My apartment is warm, but the temperature wasn't where it should have been.

The male dwarf in the picture was my first pyxie, and he was the best frog ever. I got him from Petsmart. I had him almost a year then he died, I think from Chytrid. The group of pyxie frogs in the video all came from Mozambique, Africa. I think that they all had Chyrid too, and all but one died on me. I finally got a hold of some Lamisil, and I started to treat my whole collection of frogs for it. The one that is still alive is estivating, he's been down for about 8+ months now
The female pyxie in the picture died and I mailed her body to Big's friend at Brown University, he likes to dissect them and do mounts of the skelletons after.

I got some new Pyxie frogs in from Petsmart, 2 giants and 5 dwarfs. The two giants are doing well, one I just got in and he's about the size of my fingernail. The other is starting to get big.
The dwarfs I've had some problems with, one developed an eye infection (looks like pop eye on a fish) and the other had Bacterial Meningitis. The one with the eye infection is about 95% better, there is still a bit of cloudiness, the one with Bacterial Meningitis, I had euthanized at the vet's. They said that there were treatment options that we could try, but they don't always work.
The other 3 Dwarfs are estivating, but one died while estivating. The other two are doing alright, but have been down about 8 months or so now.
All my Dwarf Pyxies are in quarantine, as is the new giant pyxie.

My point is, avoid buying from a pet shop if you can. You can get some good frogs, but you can also get some really sick frogs too. Proper quarantine procedures are important, especially if you have other frogs at home, also getting your frogs tested for Chytrid and/or doing the Lamisil baths on them is important too.

Hi everyone i am new to the forum. I have a year and half old pacman male (cranswelli).Just got an adorable baby pixie not sure if she is a dwarf or regular. I read earlier a post that said the dwarves have one stripe as a baby whereas the regular pixie has 3 and I think that is the case with mine but I am not positive. Anyways i am going to try post some pics after work

@Fatfrogfan: I see 3 stripes on yours...so probably a giant. But someone else could tell you more for sure.
