I have ordered crickets from 5 different places and have seen this hairy inch worm like bug in with the crickets. I got some at a show recently and theirs had this bug in it. Oh, I'd say about 7 in each container. What is it? And is it bad? I do business with a place in the mid west and their packages never have this bug? Just wondering why? Are their crickets higher quality is that why they do not have this bug? Just wondering, because I have to place an order soon. I go through so many crickets now...I have now included them in my monthly bills. Sad, but true.

I had that problem too! Except it was crickets from Petsmart. I think I wrote about it in my post about changing my cricket food.

Ok so we got the crickets, which we get from Petsmart (since I only have 2 frogs I don't order them and I get 24 at a time from Petsmart, which lasts like a week) anyway, when I dumped the crickets into the container I have for them, I noticed this really freaky looking thing that I think is some kind of caterpillar, it is fuzzy and blackish brown and the size of medium sized cricket.

It's called a "Dermestid Beetle" and the fuzzy worm thing is the larval form of the beetle

I have never seen this at all in the crickets I've ordered. I have ordered from Ghann's and I did buy two boxes of 500 once from a vendor at a show. None that I've seen yet.

They will also get in your foodstuffs. What starving college student hasn't dumped out a bunch of these is their morning cereal? Nasty. I also believe this is the infamous "bookworm" if i'm not mistaken? JVK

These hairy aliens turn into little black flying beetles, they both are handy at removing flesh from dead critters, I really do not think they could be found in cereal, maybe something similar. I routinely get them with my crickets as well as brown recluse spiders of which I killed one in todays cricket order. Think of them as the prize in the cracker jacks Oh yea, Beardeds love them.

I worked with a lady at the Forest Service who had a colony that was used to strip flesh from skulls.

The ones found in old cereal, etc. are probably a close cousin or something. Thought I saw something on Discovery that these were the infamous bookworm, that has devoured ancient texts.

A side note, once upon a time 'lil Jesse got hi'self a DUII. Well, his wonderful several night jail stay included a a spectacular incarnceration feast that included a generous helping of Purple Kool-Aid liberally infused with the shed skin of this species, yummy, yummy! (true story) JVK

I have seen these before. I fed one to one of my frogs one day and then another time just let it go in the backyard.

That makes me not want to order crickets anymore. I am really scared of brown recluse spiders! I have found a spider in my small cricket keeper that I keep by the tank to feed. I assumed it had gotten in there to feast. Maybe it actually was there all along. EEEEEEEEEEEWWWWW!!!!!!

Oh my gosh. My bf Aunt just died from a Brown Recluse Spider bite. Those are nasty spiders.

But those wormy things are in LLLReptiles crickets too. I rearranged my livingroom and found a bunch of them under everything....no beetles though. GROSS!!!!

Ew, excuse me but I am still grossed out by the roach I found on my KITCHEN TABLE!! this morning. And it wasn't a Texas tree roach, it was a house roach medium sized. I do believe it came in the bags I brought from the dollar store last night that I put on the table when I got home. That's the only thing I can think of. My husband is going to flip tonight when he hears about it! I better start moving my herps to another room because I sense some more exterminating this weekend. That was just disgusting.

Sorry to change the topic a little, but it is bugs that come with packages. Ew!

Sounds like I need to stick with Ghann's crickets.

Although I wil say I had to e-mail them this week because the cricket food I bought from them had little bugs in it. Like the kind you find in old cereal boxes at houses where people don't live in them year around. I contacted them and they gave me credit back for the food.
