I recently heard that this Mantella would no longer be exported from Madagasger, I checked the Cites quota for 2009 and there will be NO exports.
This may mean that the owners of this species have inherited a heavy burden for the maintenance and breeding of this species to sustain captive populations. Anyone that has these and is uncomfortable with this chore is urged to locate others who are more able.
I hope that most keepers here recognize our ethical and moral obligations to pass as many species as possible to future generations of froggers like us.
They will ultimatley hold us responsible. Let's prove that we are!!!

From an importer. Make no mistake about it, when they stop exporting there is very little to no chance that it will begin agian.
It is also possible for a Cites 1 listing.
You and others who have these, may very well hold the future of this species in captivity. Beyond the obvious problems of breeding and rearing,
there may be problems associated with a limited gene pool.
Any one that has these should consider registering thier animals with the ASN at Treewalkers.org. Any keepers that are hesitant to register, are asked to maintain detailed and accurate records.

Sounds like good news, there has been way too much imports of rare madagascarian frog species. And for a pretty long time, but still people have continued to buy wc ones hence their price or their easy accessability. Hopefully the owners of these do realize their responsability, and we will see how this hobby can help the existance of multiple species, or if all of them can be maintained here. Maybe later some sustainable practises can be developed and borders opened, most likely not in near future though if at all.

this is very interesting..

i have one group registered with Frogtracks. but not TreeWalkers yet.

i am also not going to be focussing on breeding these guys until i know that they have settled in well and are healthy enough to withstand changes in their environment in order to induce breeding..

I will no doubt try my hand at it though.

i have looked long and hard for these guys and have spent a great deal of $$ on them and their care up to now.. so they will be staying with me.

While there may be a few folks already breeding them, every animal becomes especially important at this time.
Captive populations are precariously close to the event horizon of the
Frog Black Hole, from which none ever return.

Well I know from past experiences that James Wooten on Geckophoria.com usually has rare and exotic species of amphibians for sale. I know that he just sold out of all the Mantella milotympanum. I so badly want to obtain some mantellas before they stop importing them all together. You guys should check out his website.
