A comment given by hayden on another thread has lead me to ask the question. What's up with the moss? Why is it so hard to find moss here in the u.s.? Is it illegal or something? I have tried many different types of moss that are available on line in my tanks and not one, not one has looked anything like what i have seen in some of these crazy looking tanks. And even if i succeed in making something similar to what i see, it does not last longer then two weeks because the moss starts to die. Why is it so hard to find moss!??

I think the main problem most people face isn't the actual moss but lighting issues. Most moss has to have a lot of light to look like the amazing tanks seen on the other post.

Trying to start a few cork pieces with growth to move to other set up, and I leave the light on 18hrs. It is growing pretty well, but it takes some attention in the beginning. Odd to give that much attention to a plant but its for the frogs in the long run.

I bought some Frog Moss at SEWERfest reptile show over a month ago. I have it in my Clown Tree frog Tank with just a 40 watt light bulb over it. It's still green as can be. I do plan on getting a plant light for this tank too.

Hard to find? I collect it locally in Kansas, if that says anything...

What do you do to the Moss before adding it to your tanks Derek(incase of bugs and such)?

I really dont do much to it to tell you the truth. Sometimes i dunk it in water when i recieve it, but thats about it. I think that it might be the lighting. Im going to try to post some pics of the set up and you guys can tell me if its the lighting. Ive used pillow moss, sheet moss, and even that irish moss which i know wont last forever unless i give it a dormant period, but ive never seen it spread or even look like what i see in some of these tanks with growing moss on the wood and bark. But i dont think the moss that is being used in some of these tanks are the same as the ones listed, or are they?

Rick, what lighting do you use? That makes all the difference in the world.

Lisa, I have not used it in a while but I used to put it in the freezer for a while or dunk it in water several times to wash away eggs and stuff...

Isn't moss like algae? They grow because of the light set up in the tank? I want to know how to get moss.

I use the exo terra 2.0 flourescent bulbs and 5.0 flourescent bulbs. Im currently using 13watt ones, two are 2.0 and the other is 5.0. Its really hot out here in california, (reaches over 100 here in the mojave almost every summer day) so ive been using the smaller wattage bulbs. But i use the 26watt durng the winter. tank is 24hx24wx48t.

The back of the tank im gonna replace with a different plant. I just dont know what yet. The front area i also want to change. I know this sounds crazy but, I HATE MY TANK!!!! I cant get it right. Theres always something thats off. Its killing me. If anyone can give some constructive criticism and suggestions, i would highly appreciate it. Thanks.

Most of the time when the moss turns brown, it's because it too hot or too wet.

Try taking it out of the tank, and let it dry out on some paper towels for a few days. once it's dry, try it again.

If You find it too hard to keep dry enough, You might have to lay out some cork board or something between the moss and substrate.
