Long time no see, guys! Up to 4 ACFs now and just recently lost my last ADF sadly.

Well yesterday my parents came home to find someone DUMPED a female Eastern Box Turtle on our porch. I SERIOUSLY hate people so much. She's obviously a pet as she lets me pet her head and rub her neck all over unlike the semiferal tortioses we had at school who hid when you picked them up. She doesn't mind 1 bit. My dad was gonna let her go but I'm scared to death she won't make it and will be hit as the woods next to us is between a massive highway and a very busy, anti-turtle street. She is just too calm as well. I'm afraid she may not fully have all her instincts as she appears to be 25-30 years old (the rings are sooooo many and hard to count). I have her in a 55 gallon filled with Eco Earth, a hidey, some lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, kale, and other veggies I read off a site. I also have a 60ish watt bulb on one half of the tank right now as a heat source. It's all I had from my frogs and hermies left over.

Any help would be beyond helpful right now. I had a turtle when I was tiny but we listened to the petstore (I found him when he was the size of a quarter and they let me keep him) and we had him for 8ish years but he wasn't kept well looking back on it and I regret that so much. In my gut I have a really, really bad feeling about letting her go. Something keeps telling me that letting her go would be the end of the road for her. I know she's just one little turtle but I can't help it. There's a reason someone left her here. Everyone knows we rescue ferrets and other animals all the time, it was only a matter of time before this happened. I trust you guys so much which is why I've come here first.

RIP

I can't help in this situation but I'm sure someone will be along soon (I hope) It's been a bit quiet around here since new member reg was shut down.

Until then... keep poking around on the internet and I hope all works out well. I wouldn't be able to release!! I'd be fearing the same things you are!

A hammer will fix just about anything.

Your setup sounds okay, but you may want to make a turtle pen outside where you can let it get real sunlight for a few hours during the day if you're planning to keep it long-term. A kiddie pool, or fenced in area would work.

Dust the food with some calcium once in a while. Combine that with the sunshine, and this will help prevent softening of the shell which happens to indoor turtles sometimes.

Get a wide shallow dish large enough for it to sit in completely that it can easily get in and out of it.

Avoid iceberg lettuce, it's got the nutritional content of water. Dark green leaf veggies are healthier.

We can never go back to the way it was...

If you don't want her, why not sell her or rehome her? Our Petsmart here has a baby box turtle in, and they want $400 for her

I would not let her go for fear of spreading any illness she may carry, as well as like you say she may not know how to survive. I would also offer earthworms and nightcrawlers, berries, a slug or snails, pieces of fish, baby mice.Should have a shallow water pan for drinking and soaking. I would not try to sell it as it is probably protected by state law.Try and se if you have a local herpetological society that typically run rescues for these situations. Good luck, Bill
