Well I'm new here and I don't plan on going anywhere so here I am.

I'm originally from Minnesota but live in Wisconsin with my girlfriend of 2.5 years, my cat, fish, RETF, and soon to be grey and green tree frogs. I've got one semester left for a BS in cell & molecular bio and chemistry and have applied to several grad schools including my first choice which is the ph.d program at the Mayo clinic in rochester (fingers and toes crossed!)
The fish in the pic is of a smallmouth bass taken out of the Mississippi river as part of a study I did last summer on sport-fish intestinal worms. That particular fish had over 1600 parasitic worms in it's digestive tract! I'm currently assisting in a lab that is examining the effects of methyl mercury on gene expression in zebrafish, and I work in a water chemistry lab for the U.S.G.S, so basically I am a big lab rat. Anyway I must say that this site has been a big help getting me back into the hobby, so thanks!

Ick. Would people ordinarily eat this kind of fish? If so, when you cook it do the worms die? And then do people eat the dead worms? Or are they all cleaned out when the fish is gutted?

What does the methyl mercury do to gene expression?

What do you do in the water chemistry lab?

Where did you find those things?!

Jennifer: People do eat these fish (not me), the worms I found were in the digestive tract which is removed prior to cooking, and none of the ones I found can infect humans. Most worms that can infect humans are encysted somewhere in the muscle but they generally die if cooked thoroughly.

As for mercury, we are not sure yet. We think that genes involved with reproduction may be affected by higher doses of mercury but we haven't got that far yet.

I do all sorts of things in the H2o chem lab. The main project I work on deals with fatty acid transfer in aquatic ecosystems, so I process samples and will eventually extract the fatty acids from them for analysis. The past few days of work I have been working on method development for a project examining nitrification. I enjoy it but it can get frustrating; the other day four hours of tedious work was for nothing when we realized we had been given nitrATE instead of nitrITE for our standard curve. Not cool.

I'd like to think so, but honestly anyone who puts their mind to it can learn this stuff. I wasn't the greatest student in high school but my work ethic changed in college and I've done really well so far.

work ethic

Thats what is it all about.. that and finding something you are interested in. I was a horrible student in HS too.. of course, unlike BWebb, I am still a dumb ass now

I was horrible in High School and was really good in the first part of college and then the last part I wasn't so hot. However, in my MA program, I kicked butt!

I second that being interested in something is key. If you are passionate about what you do, you will do well.

Hello all, I'm still alive. I just haven't had much time or energy to get on here lately. I check up on stuff periodically. Great to see some old faces on here still.

Haha, more to love frogbert! Your hubby looks happy, so don't be too self-deprecating.

Josh -- shoot me an email please at iron_bird_francois@hotmail.com. I have a few questions about my tincs I received last week, and Kyle on dendroboard is too busy to answer them thoroughly. I know you'll have the few answers I want...

Heather -- your daughter's adorable. Raise her with a good sense of humor.

My husband is very happy! As am I! We have been best friends for 11 years and married for 7. He is so skinny and I am fat. Kinda like Abbott and Costello
or the Professor Bunsen and Beaker

Well the fat is on the way OUT. FINALLY! I have a Syndrome called PCOS that effects my insulin, hormones, triglycerides, etc. Got some meds from the doctor to control my insulin output. Changed my diet to low fat and very low carb. Lost 8 lbs in 2 weeks already. Got about 72 left. IT is kind of easy to make better choices when a doctor tells you you can die any time if you don't!

Me, Bridget, from SE Wisconsin (I see we have more Wisconsin people now!) I'm currently a full-time student this year finishing my Bachelor's at DeVry. Then maybe on to the Master's program.

I got into frogs, my daughter wanted them, now they're mine (parents know how that goes!) We have the 2 RETFs, 3 cats (18,11,9) and a 4 yr old Mastiff.

My dog Bella. (She's about 200# in this pic, she is on a diet though and maybe has lost some weight now we hope.)

Niice, Tortuga-island Frogbert, must have been a fun trip, I wish I could visit also CR sometime.

Where you on Vacation, or do you live there?

I wish, I am though now trying to go through process of turning from scandinavian to latino so I would blend in better.

Hey Miko you never call me, i wrote you an e mail dude!

Hey Eric! I send you the email but I never got a response :? I wonder if there was something wrong with email? I visited STRI btw the day before I left, theres my name in the library and bookstore namelists ;) but I couldnt find you. I couldnt do the Barro Colorado because the day it would have been possible to me, they had sadly a group of university students coming so it was fulll booked. But this was such a hectic trip, but in a couple of years I will make a more through Central American excursion hopefully.
