With Red eye tree frogs, should I do a false bottom in my 135 gal tank or just set it up with the soil and fiber that you all said? Will the soil start to get a odor and how do you keep it clean? Would I be better with a false bottom so I can filter it..

flase bottoms are great. they are a lightweight option over the all gravel drainage layer that is used so often.

Weight is not a issue.. I have a full tank of water now.. over 1200 pounds.

what do you do. Gravel then screen then your soil.. Does it get a smell after awhile? Can I put like a pump to suck out old water from gravel time to time. How do you all do it.

I can do a false bottom aswell but trying to figure out what is easier and which way will be the cleanest..

With REs I can't see the need for drainage since you shouldn't be adding much water to begin with. They only need about 30-60% humidity... and that shouldn't cause much water collection on the bottom of the tank.

I had a 45 gallon with a pair of RE's and never had more than a very thin later of water under my coco nor did I ever get anything more than a "dirt" smell

Just something to consider

The layers would be Leca or gravel, screen over that, then coco fiber. But Heather is right, you really don't need to do set up like this as the more humidity you get the more likely you have bacterial issues, Bill

I been there several time and did on in the past.. Just wanted to know if it would benefit me with RETF or if it would help with odor to take that step with a false bottom.

Remove feces by hand for your odor control.

imo, false bottoms are VERY beneficial for ANY frogs
it WONT raise the humidity high enough to cause any problems... misting and blocking ventilation are what severely raises humidity
like i told you in another post, you can check up dendroboard or vivariumforum for GREAT false bottom ideas
odors probably wont ever be a problem with RETF.. if you use a false bottom, you might wanna use a pump to make a bit or circulation
i personally prefer the eggcrate method as the water isnt stagnant in LECA/gravel
with a 135g, i would definately do a eggcrate
if you have enough plants and bugs living in your soil, you dont need to change the water, as long as it keeps being circulated

coco fiber is a very bad soil for most plants as it holds no nutrients and isnt airy
you need to mix a few different thing in order to have a proper soil
look up for Atlanta botanical Garden mix on dendroboard (ABG soil mix)
its a well proven mix

if you have bugs (springtails, isopod) they will remove anything thats on the ground, for feces on leaves and branches, you need to spot clean them everynow and then

good luck

I've had this spring peeper for over 4 years..!
