Do you think I could keep a toad in it. Does the wood ever rot? Ive also heard that I would need a fan to keep the air moving is this true?

Yep, they are called "CrossFire Enclosures". I built two of them this fall, one houses my Bearded Dragons, the other houses my Cane Toads. This is mine:

The inside of my tanks are coated with a product called "Enviro Epoxy". It seals the inside of the tank, so it won't rot and this product is also heat resistant.

I have fans on mine, like a small computer fan. If you don't put a fan, you will need more vents to allow air movement.

I really like them, they keep the heat in better then glass tanks.

The exterior of my tank is all wooden, coated with silicone and waterfall expanding foam. Being that the humidity in my tank is MUCH higher than yours would be, I think that it should be fine. Just make sure to coat it! Here is my tank build log: URL

DIY CrossFire Enclosure

First I would like to say that this site was put together to give better directions to people thinking on building their own bearded dragon enclosure or for any other reptile. The plans were designed by Russ from Crossfire Dragons and he helped me Drew Van Driesen known as dvandriesen on alot of forums out on the whole entire thing because he had all of the tools we needed. Here is what the cage looks like when your done following all the steps below. This is for a 4'x2'x2' enclosure.

I use GE Silicone II for Windows and Doors on my enclosures.
Just be sure when using silicone to let it dry for a long time (2 weeks-1 month) before adding your frogs to the tank.

I didn't build a lid on mine, it's just a solid top. My tank opens from the front, the ventilation is on the sides and the lighting is attached to the top.

Do I have to take a side off or can I just leave it the way it is? How do you keep the frogs and crickets in do you have a screen over it?

The top is solid, it's made out of plywood too. The light fixtures are screwed into it.

The doors in the front we made like a china cabinet/exoterra kind of style. Its a wooden frame with glass inserts for viewing.

I have vents on the sides that are covered with screen. In the first picture, you can see a hole that was drilled into the side of the tank. That is for a fan to create extra air movement.

The frogs and crickets aren't able to get out.

I don't think you need to take a side off, just drill some holes in the sides or the back to put in some vents for air movement.

The Bottom Unit houses my Cane Toads, it is 72 inches long x 36 inches Wide x 24 inches High. It is one solid unit. (About 270 gallons)

The top Unit houses my Bearded Dragons, it is 72 inches long x 36 inches wide x 48 inches High. This unit comes apart in 3 pieces: Top half, Bottom half, and the "face plate" which is the front piece with the doors. (about 540 gallons)

I just love this style of enclosures. I plan on converting most of my tanks to this style eventually.
The color of stain we used on the outside is "Early American" by Minwax.

Do you have any pictures of what your tank looks like so far?

You could get a piano hinge and make a frame and attach some mesh or screen to the frame and have a lid that flips open. It would provide light and some ventilation.
We made the frames for the doors on my enclosure out of Douglas Fir from Home Depot. Douglas Fir is a good strong wood, and a good choice if you are making frames for doors or lids.

I recommend staining if it is made out of nice plywood. It gives it a more finished look, and you could try to match the stain to the other furniture that you have.

Plug card into your computer. If you are using a desktop there is probably one built in, if you are using a laptop there probably isn't.

Then you find the chip under my computer and just use it like a normal folder.
