Here is a question........ I was in a new fancy pet store today and talked to them about my WTF who won't eat much. The owner asked where I got it and then said it was probably a wild caught frog and not raised in captivity. When I asked the difference, he said the ones bred for pets would eat better and that mine might not make it. I asked why anyone would sell the wild ones and he said they cost less. We got our frog at Petco for $20... his were $45. So - has anyone heard of this difference?

while i agree that a well bred/ well kept frog will undoubtedly do better in captivity then a WC caught frog ( the majority of cb's dont have the parastie loads wc frogs do )....that is not an accurate way to tell a WC frog from a CB frog....

CB frogs that are kept poorly prior to being purchased and set up in an appropriate enclosure can have adjustment and appetite problems just the same......

have you had any fecal's done to rule out internal parasites, etc?

Nope - never even thought of it... And he is so tiny I don't know what his poops look like. We have had him for about 4 weeks and he has only eaten about 5 times. I know this is NOT enough for a WTF. They are supposed to be greedy.

Honestly i don't think that yours was WC just because whites are seen so frequently CB. And the raised in captivity thing, yours is very young so i just don't see it. Sounds to me like someone is trying to sell a frog; most whites aren't around the $45, they are usually around $20.

Also most of the WC frogs i've seen for sale have been more expensive than CB ones. Just what i've seen.

Well that makes sense to me. Plus why would anyone go to the trouble to catch tiny wild frogs when you can breed them? But it doesn't help me figure out why he won't eat.. and I'm worried. Any ideas? I know the temp, humidity, and set up are fine.

You should probably start a new thread so you can do a run down of everything in your tank and the temp and humidity...and post pics of your tank and your frog. So more people will see it and be able to help out.

I have 2 WC White's tree frogs and I think they eat better then the CB that I've had forever.

Well - I did start other threads - but got few replies. One in feeding and one in general. So I'm going to post the run-down here and see what info I get back. If I do also post it someplace else - where would I get the best response? General?

So here it is...

Tank:

Lighting:

Substrate:

and a little of:

Humidity is between 50 - 80 depending upon when I spray. Tems are 79 - 80 during the day about 70 at night. Frog climbs changes color, looks healthy.... but rarely eats....

Please take the moss out. They can acciderntly digest it and get plugged upTry get a small corner reptile hammock and put it 3/4 way up. Mine sleep in their's during the day in a pig pile. Try getting some more greenery in there so it's not so bare and put up some backing(even construction paper). This makes them feel a bit more secure

I have a question for everyone. Sorry for being so naive, but I am very new to frog ownership. I am finding that I am on a steep learning curve. LOL...

Do WTF's shed? If so, how often? I have noticed some kind of muscous-y film hanging off my frog. It seemed to also be in his mouth so I picked him up and removed it from both of his sides. It went down along his body in between his front and hind legs.

Is this normal?

Thank you Michelle...So, I should let him eat it, then? I took it out of his mouth...whoops!

Do you know about how often they shed? I have had him for a little over a week and he has done it twice.

Sha...You should never pull the shed off..you could end up hurting the frog.

Michelle is right...a backgound would do a lot of good to help him feel safe. I'd even cover 2 sides of that tank.

Since he is such a tiny baby you should have the Temp at 83-85 for day.

A few more hiding places and sticks would help too I bet

ooops. Thank you for letting me know! That is kind of gross that they eat it...**barf**...oh well, it is not like I kiss him or anything!

hahaah..

Thanks for your help.

Anyone know how often I should be expecting him to do this? Once a week or so?

Also, I just have to say how cool Humphrey is. I read that they are mood frogs and change colors depending on how they are feeling. I had no idea how brillant some of his colors would be...He has gone through a rainbow of colors in the week and a half that I have had him.

Everything from poop brown to bright lime & purple, to polka dots to blue iridescence...

So cool!!!

Their shed is actually very good for them

What do you mean by polka dots? Doesn't sound normal.

Well best to ask because tyhe frog could be sick. Blotchy or dots on their skin could mean a baterial infection from something like the tank being to wet.

Always best to ask

You think he might be sick?????????

He is a little dirty in this one...This was after he was playing around.

What an amazing forum! I am so happy I found this. How do you all feel about mixing species? A tomato frog with a WTF for instance. I created a shallow pond in my aquarium with a fogger in the center of it. Is this fogger an effective means of filtration?

invictus
Welcome to the forum... please be sure to read and sign our Rules & Etiquette

You can also do a forum search for "mixing" and learn very quickly that it is never recommended, and very few of us here agree with it.

It is also a better idea to post your own thread with your questions. Many people will miss them if asked in another members thread and they will go unanswered.

The link above will explain things better.

Thank you

invictus, just another thing. Be careful about using a fogger that sits in the water like that because it works off of vibrations or something like that and can jumble up the insides of your frog, which is what i heard when i asked about foggers on another forum. I was recommended to use a Vick's cold fogger (that might not be the exact name) on the outside and put a hose into the tank coming from the fogger and just turn it on and let it fog up the tank, although don't use it all the time, and if it is a small tank i would only use it for a very short period.

LOL the fogger isn't going to harm your frog from vibration. however those foggers can raise the water temp to unsafe levels as well as produce quite a shock which can also harm your frog.

And if you use an external machine like a humidifier, make sure it is the cool mist not warm mist.

The foggers are ultra sonic. It makes the fog by accelerating the water molecules. That, in turn also heats up the water.

Is this fogger an effective means of filtration?

Not a filter at all. I have one in my tank and its just there to make it look pretty. Like Heather says it will heat up the water and most likely shock you frog if it comes in direct contact with the fogger. If you do plan on keeping a fogger in your tank take some steps to safeguard your frogs from the above mentioned hazards.

Hey, I was wondering....my two whites tree frogs have some discoloration on their nose. Nothing along the lines of nose rub, I'm almost certain its mild scarring from jumping for crickets and accidentally hitting objects in the terrarium. Is their anything I could possible do to get rid of this discoloration/scarring?

Topgun - As Heather said above, it's a good idea to post your own thread with your questions.

Thanks!

I am starting out and have a 20 gal tank. I need help deciding what to do.

1) get the blue phase WTF It's pretty good sized, already plump and chubby

2)get a couple little WTF for that enclosure (not sure what size qualifies as a baby?)

3)get one of the little guys

4) skip the WTF and get maybe 3? GTF

Would like to frogs that are semi active so not sure if the WTF is the right choice. They don't need to be circus clowns, entertaining me morning noon and night, but I would like them to be mildly entertaining

Beginner here, so any advice welcomed.

Edit: Started my own thread somewhere else and have gotten good advice.
