They grow at different rates. Mine like to lie on a lizard hammock in a corner halfway up a wall. I stuck plants around there so that they can hide if they choose. I also cover half the tank with a dark towel(where they sleep). Leave the other half uncovered for natural lighting. I uncover at night when it's dark.

Amo...
You might want to get a few different places in the tank for him to hide.

You should stop feeding the wax worms right away. They are too high in fat and very unhealthy for WTFs. When your frog is hungry he will eat crickets...he's just used to the "twinkies".

Like said they grow at different rates.

Natural lighting... hmmmm.... I was told to get a heat lamp. I use a daytime one in the day and a moonlight one at night. Is this too bright for him? I think I'll take a photo of our tank set-up so you can let me know what I'm doing wrong.... Thanks

That's fine-lighting. My house just happens to stay warm so as long as my temps are good everyone is happy. In the winter I use more heating because my house has lots of windows.

It is hard to keep the right temps here because we have so many different animals (Rats, Guinea Pig, Lizard, Bird, Fish, Frog).... Thought they are not all in the same room.... Do you know if a frog would mind a ceiling fan being on - as long as his temp and humidity was OK?

I have mine in my front room on even during the winter to keep the temperature comfy. I have 15ft. ceilings and hardwood floors and this seems to keep every thing even. Just check your numbers and adjust accordingly.

Ammooliakin....
If you post pics of your tank you should start a new thread so more people will see it The lighting sounds good. When you post pics you should also say what the temp and humidity in your tank are.

We just got a WTF a week or so ago. It's our first frog ever. His name is Jeebus.

A couple things.
When I bought him he was brown in the pet store tank. When he was put in a little container for the drive home he turned green and when I put him in the tank at home he went brown and never went back. I personally like him brown but I'm afraid I'm not doing something right and he's not happy or something.

I got the tank at 60% humidity and 72 degrees at night and 85-86 during the day.
He's not even 2 inches yet so I guess my 10 gallon tank is ok. We feed him crickets and an occasional wax worm. We use stale water for his bowl and mistings, which we do 3-4 times a day.

Now...
He's so lazy. He jumped around only on the first day we got him. He only climbed up the glass of the tank for a day or so until I put more stuff in there for him.
I'm wondering if I made it too crowded for him. I got a fake plastic tree that looks pretty good. It's only about 4 inches across and 5 inches high and 1 and a half thick. I got a part of a log that has no guts so it acts like a little cave. He loves to sleep in there and it's the only thing I've seen him climb on but it's only 3 inches high. He left a big poop on it the other day. I also got this branch configuration that reaches the top of the tank. It's four pieces of wood bound together. The crickets love that one. Jeebus likes to lay under it.

Is it possible that he's only active after we go to bed...midnight or later? I know they are nocturnal but we darken his area just as the sun goes down, around 8. It takes him over an hour to get up and out of his sleeping area. He's worse than me!

One last thing, he's afraid of us. Every time we open the tank to go pick him up he quickly hides. We have never held him. He actually peed on me the day I took him out of the container to put him into the tank. A big strong quick shot of water came out of his butt.
Is this normal or has he been traumatized at the pet store or was the move a problem?

I have no advice since we are also enjoying our first WTF. Just to add though that ours is also quiet during the day and does not climb much. He does however change colors regularly (I'm still not sure why) and does not seem to mind being picked up. Our problem is that the little guy will only eat wax worms. I'm wondering if I'm trying to over feed him - but he won't even look at a cricket even if I hold it (flailing) in front of his face for 5 minutes. Oh well - we are having fun anyway. I have been taking a lot of photos... so I'll have to post those someplace.

I have two White's and love them!

WTFs can change their coloration due to their mood. Stressed, happy etc. Mine are both the reddish brown color normally but can change green in the middle of the day when they are sleeping or if I take them out for tank cleaning. I believe this is natural for them and will happen often.

Your humidity and temps sound good as does your feedings but I would recommend using treated tap water for him. Also you should dust your crickets with calcium maybe every 10 days or so.

White's are known to be lazy! They can take forever to wake up, unless of course, it's feeding time. Mine are very slow to do much of anything but when I give them their crickets, any of my body parts are known to be jumped on!

The darker, the more active these guys can be. Mine seldom stay out in the open if I am awake with light nearby.

It does take frogs a bit of time to get used to you, their new enviroment and the noises and activity around them. Peeing on you in showing you he is afraid of the contact. Frogs really shouldn't be handled often, if at all. I do take my WTFs out here and there and let them wander around my houseplants but not for very long or very often. Taking them out just to be held is not a good idea, although hard to resist.

Congrats on your new White's!

I'm still worried because "Dimple" won't eat crickets... just wax worms if we give them. We are trying not to - but if he has not eaten in 3 days I get worried. He is less than an inch and a half long and though he seems perfectly healthy and happy - I worry he won't be if he won't eat....

Could it be that the crickets are possibly too big for him? I think the rule to use is not to feed your frog anything that is bigger than the distance between their eyes.

Also, I am sure this is all preference, but I dump three crickets each a day for my White's right into their tank and let them eat at leisure. I do not hand feed them.

I would be concerned also if mine had not eaten for three days but others with more experience might have more to say about this.

Good luck!

Well that's interesting.....about the size of insect.... I hand fed him a cricket when he first came home to us and he ate it right up. But a couple of days later I gave him a wax worm since thats what he was used to in the pet store and he didn't want another cricket. The wax worm was HUGE. Almost half the size of the frog. But he ate the whole thing. Then I guess it was no wonder that he didn't eat again for a few days. But then since he just wouldn't eat crickets I gave him another wax worm. Since then he has refused to eat a cricket - even when I tried to rub it with a wax worm so it would smell right.... Silly me... at any rate I guess it could be a size problem. The first cricket he ate was small. The later ones perhaps too large. I assumed that if I just put the crickets in the cage he would not be able to catch them since the small ones are so fast. But maybe he would.... Hmmm. I think I'll try that next... Thanks... Even though he is adorably cute I want him to be bigger and fatter so I won't worry about him as much...

Have to give you credit for trying! Smelling like the wax worm was worth a try.

You would be surprised at how quick these guys can be when they want to. I hope no matter what works for you that he eats a cricket or two soon. Mine were a little bigger than yours when I got them, so I do not have experience with the smaller ones catching crickets.

Just so everyone knows... you'll probably get more responses if you start a seperate thread.

Amooliakin: I have frogs and lizards that like the way worms act or something and won't eat crickets, but they will eat different types of worms. so try switching him to a more low fat worm that you can feed as a staple, like nightcrawlers or earthworms.

Oh - I see - I can give him other worms... who knew? I only heard that wax worms were fattening and meal worms could cause consitpation. I am sure he likes the way they move though - becaue he would not take it from our hand, but when we put it down and it started moving he grabbed it!

As to getting more responses... thanks - but actually I'm enjoying this thread very much....

But Greg this is a WTF question and answer thread

It actually cuts down on 3 different people asking the same question is 3 different threads. Also they can learn from what others are asking and answering so they don't have to start a new thread.

Hey i was wondering, I've had my frogs for a few months now and for some reason i find one or two fruit fly looking insects floating around in the terrarium? Is this good, bad or just a coincidence?

Are you referring to gnats? Small and annoying? Don't worry! They seem to come when there's dead crickets or some other in the tank. You're fine!

I agree with Frog Style. I see these in my WTF tank from time to time. They are a natural part of the eco system you have created.

k thanks guys, i certainly make sure to clean up after them (as soon as i see their droppings) and I make sure they eat each and every cricket so hopefully its just a natural part of the eco system. It's great to get some insight regarding this issue from someone who's more experienced than myself.
