Something has to be done about the spam that your downright heroic moderators have been dealing with for so long.

Unfortunately this means temporarily disabling new user registration until I can clean out the database and install an improved captcha/registration system.

This will be done as quickly as possible, but the forum script is old and quite complicated. It's a bit like trying to make tea in someone else's kitchen, in the dark, whilst drunk and wearing boxing gloves - so it may be a day or two.

If you're not a user but you have a sick frog or something and need advice, send an email to admin(AT sign goes here)thefrog.org - I'll post your request for you and I'm sure the users here will have your little pal up and hopping again in no time Read the FAQ first and make sure you include as much information about the frog/problem as possible.

It is indeed nice to come and not want to immediately close the page.

Sort of update:
Registration should be available again soon, with a functioning CAPTCHA and email authentication - I ran out of time and ibuprofen at the weekend after pruning the userbase but should have a free evening during the week. It's going to be easier to write a new 'drop in' registration script than it is to modify the existing one - will try to make it match the current theme of the site so that it looks like an integral page.

This won't stop all spam, but it should make it an occasional event (human spam processors with email accounts) rather than an unending torrent (bots, scripts, etc,.).

I'm not in the hobby of keeping frogs anymore, though I do catch and eventually release many things after studying them. I like the hunt. I still pop in here to answer questions whenever I can, and cleanup when I have the time. I've been here forever EvolNoodle, and eventually Charlie.

I've spent a lot of time here, and here are some ideas/complaints:

It would be nice to have some sort of super-user around that could update the main page occasionally with some hobby related articles.

New users, in my experience, commonly have had complaints about figuring out how to post photos, and hyperlinks. It would be stellar if you could add mouse-over pop-up information boxes for the buttons that explained how to use them, or possibly changing the icon to something less confusing.

Any way to make the forum stretch with the browser? On a wide screen monitor, I have about 8" of white on each side of the forum. This is purely an aesthetic request, and is of no consequence if it isn't easily achieved.

Back in the day, we used to be able to have custom avatars after we reached the end of the morph photos in the post count. Admin had to install them for us, and users cannot change the avatar after that (but to remove it, and return back to the blue frog king). Any way to drop in a mod that allows us to change our avatars when we reach the top? Or assign that permission to Heather or I?

Hopefully we won't have to ban so much again, but the process of banning users, and removing all the junk posts is horribly time consuming. Any way to set it up so we can mass delete/hide a users posts once a ban is enforced. Such as an additional button that appears after ban is toggled, or a pop-up request to delete users posts when toggling the ban switch.

I had some other thoughts on this subject, but reality-land, barking dogs, and my Grandmother are not allowing me concentration enough to continue this at the moment. I'll add to this later.

Why don't you just install one of the FREE forum tools that exist on the web? One of the reasons people left [as well as myself] is the technology is literally 20 years old at this point. You know, to utilize something as basic as private messaging.

ack, my reset code for my norm profile ID is not cooperating at the passcode part. Sorry about that! Not sure what is up but it works until I re-enter the passcode.
I do web design and development and am almost graduated as part of my minor. Perhaps I could volunteer some time to help bring the forum to this century? Let me know and pm me on the group on FB about it if you want.

Yes, on a widescren browser ( even mobile devices)its often called "responsive" website building where the page moves versus needing to scroll...floats in sort of a way. There is that route and also the rouet of installing free forum software if it is preferred not to be handcoded. I work with a lot of CSS and HTML of course. Installing a captcha isnt a bad idea either for spammers. Googl provides some grat tools for captcha lately if we are looking to have this fully handcoded.

I'd rcommend some major overhaul to this. JMHO. do reach out and email me or pm me on FB and i might consider donating on a volunteer basis to help get this forum back up and running and with newer tchnology. It'd be a fun project. What is there to lose? The site can be built off this server and moved once approved so nothing happens without consent of mods. That or we can grasp it by the horns if you want and just go for it? Just a thought. try raching me at tropecopixia at gmail.com
